Looking Back: When the Sky Found Its Voice
Colorado Springs, Colorado • August 5, 2023
Long before The Curious Cloud Journal existed, I was already looking up.
I just didn't know those moments would someday become stories.
Today's post isn't from this week. It's a memory from a summer trip to Colorado Springs, where the sky reminded me that beauty and power often arrive together. It was one of those afternoons that began with curiosity, grew into respect, and ended in quiet awe.
Early that afternoon, the storm began to organize itself over the plains. Beneath a dark cloud base, something caught my eye. A slender funnel reached downward, tentative but unmistakable.
It never became a tornado where we stood, but seeing it begin to form was enough. It was both fascinating and unnerving, the kind of moment that makes conversation stop and every eye turn toward the same place in the sky.
Nature has a way of reminding us that wonder isn't always gentle.
As the afternoon continued, the storm grew into something magnificent. Towering clouds stacked upon one another like mountains in motion, each layer darker than the last.
There was no need for imagination that day. The sky was already telling its own story.
Standing beneath it, I felt wonderfully small.
Hours passed.
The rain moved through. The wind settled. The storm slowly began trading its anger for light.
As evening arrived, the western horizon began to glow beneath the departing storm. Massive cloud towers that had looked intimidating only hours before now caught the warm light of sunset.
It was the same sky.
Only the mood had changed.
Two minutes later, the horizon burst into gold and amber. The clouds became silhouettes against a sky that seemed determined to leave one final masterpiece before night.
Storms have a curious habit of creating some of the most unforgettable sunsets.
Just a few moments later, the last band of sunlight slipped beneath the storm clouds, painting the landscape with one final breath of color before darkness quietly took its place.
It was impossible not to stand still.
Sometimes that's all a remarkable sky asks of us.
☁️ Cloud Notes
Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado
This day featured powerful thunderstorm development across the Front Range, including towering cumulonimbus clouds and a brief funnel cloud visible beneath the storm base during the afternoon. As evening approached, the storms gradually weakened, allowing the setting sun to illuminate the retreating cloud structures with dramatic golden light. It was a textbook example of how severe weather can evolve into extraordinary beauty.
🌤️ A Thought to Carry With You
The skies we remember most are rarely the ones that stayed calm all day.
Perhaps the same is true of us.
The moments that shape us are often the ones that frightened us first. Time has a way of turning storms into stories, fear into perspective, and memories into something we return to, not because they were easy, but because they revealed something beautiful we couldn't see while standing in the middle of them.
