Tonight, it wasn't the clouds that made me stop and look up.
It was the Moon.
And for once, I wasn't standing beneath the sky alone.
My daughter was beside me.
The Moon we see so often had become something unfamiliar. Much of its normally bright face had darkened into shades of burnt orange, copper, and red, while a brilliant sliver of white remained along its upper edge.
It looked almost as though someone had slowly drawn a shadow across it.
We stood outside together watching the eclipse, looking up at a Moon that seemed to belong to some other night, some other world.
There are certain things you know are happening far above you. You can read about them, see photographs of them, and understand the science behind them.
But actually standing beneath one is different.
Tonight, Earth's shadow was there in front of us, written across the face of the Moon.
The red was what caught me most.
It wasn't the familiar silvery Moon peeking between clouds. It was warm and strange, glowing in shades of rust and ember against an almost black sky.
A Moon we knew, wearing colors we rarely get to see.
And then there was this view.
This photograph may be my favorite of the three.
The contrast is incredible. A brilliant white arc remains at the top while the rest of the lunar disk disappears into deep reddish shadow. You can almost trace the boundary between light and darkness.
For a journal devoted to looking upward, this was a very good night to remember to do exactly that.
☁️ Cloud Notes
Tonight's clouds weren't the stars of the show, but the atmosphere still left its fingerprints on the photographs.
A faint haze or very thin cloud appears to have been present around the Moon, particularly in the first two images. It softened the moonlight and produced the beautiful diffuse glow surrounding the lunar disk.
The reddish color of the Moon itself, however, wasn't created by those clouds.
During a lunar eclipse, Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, allowing Earth's shadow to fall across the lunar surface. Sunlight passing through the edges of our atmosphere is scattered and filtered. Much of the shorter blue light is scattered away, while more red and orange light is bent into Earth's shadow and can reach the Moon.
It's the same basic reason sunsets can burn orange and red.
Except tonight, that filtered light traveled all the way to the Moon before coming back to our eyes.
There is something rather beautiful about that.
The red on the Moon began with sunlight passing through the atmosphere surrounding the Earth beneath our feet.
💭 Sky Reflection
I've photographed a lot of skies.
I've watched clouds grow from tiny white puffs into towering afternoon formations. I've watched storms turn daylight gray. I've watched sunlight find openings between clouds and sunsets paint ordinary evenings extraordinary colors.
But sometimes the sky gives us something that isn't really about the photograph at all.
Tonight, my daughter stood beside me.
We both tilted our heads toward the same patch of darkness and watched the Moon turn red.
And I wonder if that is part of why humans have always been so fascinated by the sky.
For thousands of years, people have looked upward when something unusual happened above them. Long before anyone understood orbital mechanics or Earth's shadow, someone must have stood beneath a red Moon with another person beside them and wondered at what they were seeing.
Tonight, we understood more of the science.
But the wonder was probably much the same.
Someday I may forget what we were doing before we walked outside. I may forget exactly what we said while we stood there.
But I hope I remember looking over and knowing my daughter was seeing exactly what I was seeing.
Because some photographs preserve the sky.
Others preserve a moment.
These managed to do both.
🌙 A Thought to Carry With You
Some nights ask us
to notice the clouds.
Some ask us
to look beyond them.
And every once in a while,
the sky gives us something rare enough
to make us stop whatever we were doing,
step outside,
and simply stand there together.
The Moon turned red.
But the part I hope I remember most
is who was beside me when it did.
