July 17, 2026 | The Quiet Between Days

Some skies ask to be admired.

Others ask to be listened to.

Today's sky offered very little in the way of dramatic clouds. No towering thunderheads. No brilliant sunsets. Just a warm evening sun settling toward the horizon, casting long shadows across familiar pavement and bathing everything in soft golden light.



It's easy to believe that only spectacular skies are worth remembering. We chase the towering storms, the impossible colors, the rare formations.

But perhaps the quiet evenings deserve a place in the journal too.

Because these are the moments that become the spaces between memories. The ordinary drives home. The warm air drifting through an open window. The way the light slowly changes until another day quietly slips into yesterday.

Cloud watching has taught me something unexpected.

The sky never repeats itself.

Even when it appears empty, it is still changing. Light bends differently. Air moves differently. The sun sits at a slightly different angle than it did yesterday. Every moment becomes one that has never existed before and never will again.

Maybe that's why I keep looking up.

Not because every sky is extraordinary...

...but because every sky is unique.

Today's Reflection

We spend so much of life waiting for remarkable moments that we sometimes overlook the quiet ones.

Yet it is often the ordinary evenings that become the strongest memories years later.

Perhaps beauty isn't always asking us to stop.

Sometimes it's simply asking us to notice.

Cloud Notes

The sky was mostly clear during the evening, with only a few wisps of high cloud lingering near the horizon. The atmosphere felt calm after yesterday's storm activity, allowing the warm July sun to dominate the landscape and paint everything with soft golden light.

The sky was covered by a thick gray cloud deck stretching from horizon to horizon. There were no dramatic thunderheads yet, no towering columns of cloud announcing an approaching storm.   Homeward Beneath a Thousand Skies June 26, 2026 | Georgia to Missouri The day began before sunrise as we pulled away from Cumming, Georgia, while much of the world was still asleep. By the time we reached the mountains of eastern Tennessee, dawn had quietly arrived. Low clouds wrapped themselves around the ridges, drifting through the trees like slow-moving rivers of mist. The mountains seemed to wake one layer at a time, revealing just enough of themselves before disappearing again behind the fog. For a while, it felt less like driving through the mountains and more like driving through the clouds themselves. Where towering thunderstorms and rain shafts dominated the horizon just twenty-four hours ago, only a vast expanse of uninterrupted blue remains. The atmosphere appears remarkably clear, with no visible cloud cover in the immediate area. The sun shines brightly overhead, casting sharp rays across the deep blue sky. The air feels calmer, as if the storms of yesterday swept the atmosphere clean and left behind a fresh canvas. Cloud Notes Sometimes the most interesting observation is the absence of clouds.
