From Quiet Waters to Silver Linings

Some days whisper instead of shout.

This morning began along the peaceful shores of Lake Lanier in Buford, where the water was almost perfectly still beneath a blanket of soft layered clouds. Their reflections faded into the lake until it became difficult to tell where the sky ended and the water began. A lone boat crossed the distance, leaving only a gentle ripple behind before the lake settled back into silence.

As the afternoon carried me back to Cumming, the atmosphere slowly began to change. The delicate cloud layers that had greeted the morning gradually thickened into broader patches of stratocumulus. Sunlight still filtered through the openings, illuminating bright white cloud tops while darker bases hinted that the atmosphere was gathering a little more moisture.

By early evening the transformation was unmistakable. The sky became almost completely covered by a textured gray ceiling. Small openings of blue peeked through, but they seemed temporary, like windows that would soon close. It wasn't an ominous sky, only a thoughtful one. The light softened, shadows disappeared, and the landscape settled into quiet anticipation.

Then, almost unexpectedly, the clouds stepped aside.

A brilliant edge of blue opened beneath the retreating cloud deck, and the evening sun traced every curve of the clouds with silver light. The contrast between darkness and brightness lasted only a short while, but it was enough to remind me why I keep looking up. The sky rarely tells the same story twice, and sometimes the most beautiful chapter is the one that appears just before the day comes to an end.
